Functions and educational goals of digitalization in cultural education

This joint project focuses on functions and educational goals with a theoretical or empirical basis, access portals, target groups and how digital aspects are being integrated into cultural (adult) education services. The data base is an analysis of the programs offered by adult education centers (Volkshochschule). In order to gain deeper insight both into the opportunities and challenges of program planning and into enabled learning/acquisition and usage processes of the participants, interviews with program planners and participants are also conducted for selected program formats. In the German education system, the Volkshochschulen are the most reliable and widely-available providers of cultural education outside schools, providing a consistent service to the entire population. Their staff’s complex, negotiated program planning is not based on a specified curriculum, but instead incorporates the requirements of society and the needs of the participants. As a result, programs at Volkshochschulen bring together innovative developments in cultural education services, such as those that can be expected through digitalization.

Methodically interweaving the perspectives of program offered, course planning and participants forms the basis for an empirical description of current program structures, program planning strategies in the field, and acquisition and usage processes by the participants. This enables the formation of a comprehensive and fundamental theory on digitalization in (adult) cultural education.
